Hello all, Dr. Michelle here.
If none of you were aware, April is here and it just happens to be Autism Awareness Month. It is likely that we know someone that has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) because approximately 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with ASD (1) and rates have been increasing steadily since the early 2000s. ASD is difficult to diagnose and involves a multi-disciplinary team that usually consists of a pediatrician, psychologist, speech-language pathologist, and occupational therapist. Signs for ASD can vary in timing, with some signs manifesting around 6 months old and some not being obvious until one is 24 months old (2).
The cause of ASD is still unknown but it can be linked to many different factors such as chemical imbalances, heavy metal toxicity, viruses, poor gut health/food sensitivity or even lack of oxygen during the birth process.
Chiropractors frequently see patients that are on the spectrum. Recent research in the Journal of Pediatric and Maternal Health, demonstrates improvement of ASD under subluxation based chiropractic care. It also reveals the relationship between abnormalities in the spine, nervous system, and the brain. Proper brain development depends on proper structure and movement of the spine at a young age. In addition to subluxation based chiropractic care, we also support the body with detoxification(3).
As I mentioned earlier, there has been a correlation between ASD and heavy metal build up. To help the body detoxify from those heavy metals, Pascal Chiropractic offers the ion cleanse detoxification by AMD. This technology pulls toxins out of the body that the body was otherwise unable to chelate and elimate (including heavy metals). Multiple recent studies demonstrated that introducing the ion cleanse detoxification system over 4 months lowered children’s ATEC (Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist) scores by over 50% which lead to fewer and less severe problems for the patients.
