Fall is finally here and so are all of the sniffles and sneezes! “Flu season” is now underway and there are plenty of alternative ways of protecting yourself from this year’s flu strain.
Lifestyle plays a key role in whether we stay healthy on a consistent basis or not. It can be difficult during this season to incorporate the right nutrients into your daily eating habits and the stress of the holiday season can take a toll on your immune system.
Our immune system is the most integral in keeping us healthy and making sure that we can function to our best ability. Spinal adjustments can have a positive effect on the immune system. In fact, we’ve had patients that have called our office for an emergency visit because they felt like they “were getting sick” or had a fever and they knew that they needed to get checked and possibly adjusted.
The chiropractic adjustment reduces the interference that is placed upon the nervous system and allows the body (and all of its systems) to perform optimally. Getting checked for vertebral subluxation regularly do wonders for the immune system, because a functioning immune system is the key to protecting us from bacteria, viruses, and other infectious diseases. Our bodies are able to adapt to the forces put upon us and overcome the effects of disease.
A passage from Pathways to Family Wellness (pathwaystofamilywellness.org) states that, “Chiropractors helping patients battle the flu is not a new occurrence. During the 1917–18 influenza epidemic, an estimated 20 million people died throughout the world, including about 500,000 Americans. It was chiropractic’s success in caring for flu victims that led to the profession’s licensure in many states. Researchers reported that in Davenport, Iowa, out of the 93,590 patients treated by medical doctors, there were 6,116 deaths— a loss of one patient out of every 15. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport adjusted 1,635 cases of flu-stricken patients, with only one subsequent death. Outside Davenport, chiropractors in Iowa cared for 4,735 cases with only six deaths— one out of 866. During the same epidemic, in Oklahoma, out of 3,490 flu patients under chiropractic care, there were only 7 deaths. Furthermore, chiropractors were called in for 233 cases that were given up as lost by the medical establishment, and reportedly saved all but 25. In another report covering 4,193 cases by 213 chiropractors, 4,104 showed complete recovery.”
Remember that chiropractors do not treat conditions, that is reserved for those who practice medicine. As chiropractors, we act as facilitators. We emphasize on restoring function to the body through the nervous system and help your body recognize its full potential.
Our main goal this season is to help you become the best you & make sure that even though everyone in your office got the flu, your body will be equip to fight whatever bug comes your way.
