A New and Healthy You for 2019

Happy 2019! It is that time of the year again where everyone is saying New Year, New Me.


Many people want to make changes but may not know where to start, so we are here to help! It doesn’t take much to improve your health, it’s more about maintaining the small changes over time. For the new year, we wanted to give out a few easy tips to improve one’s health, starting with eating better, being more active, and getting your nervous system checked.


Eating healthier is a great place to start and it’s easier than many think. Simply avoiding many of the processed foods that are so common is a great first step. Many processed foods are loaded with hidden sugars and chemicals that are inflammatory when ingested and add to the chemical stress the body has to manage. Picking the salad or vegetables instead of the fast food or french fries can go a long way.

If you have a significant other or someone that you share many meals with, it is much easier to maintain this if you can get them on board. Be each other’s support and talk the other person out of those beloved cheat days.


Getting active does not necessarily mean that you have to get an expensive gym membership. There are plenty of things that you can do daily to get up and get active.

One thing that you can do to start is getting out there and going for a brisk walk for at least 30 minutes a day. Instead of sitting down and watching the television when you get home after work, how about go out for a walk around the neighborhood before winding down from work?


Getting a device like a Fitbit or other activity tracker to help you track your steps or active minutes can help tremendously. Getting to set your fitness goals and see your progress makes the app a great accountability partner.


Start taking the stairs when you can versus taking the elevator. Plenty people don’t even think about taking the stairs if there is an elevator, but if you’re looking to start getting more active without going to the gym, look to taking those stairs instead.


Find workout videos that you can do in your own living room. YouTube is full of great workout videos from cardio/plyometric videos to yoga videos that you can do in your own home. A personal favorite of ours is Yoga with Adriene on YouTube. Plenty of the workouts are 30 minutes to an hour to be convenient for those who don’t have much time to get a workout in.


Find a friend that wants to get active with you. If you have a partner in this, you are more likely to stay on it!


Last but not least, get your nervous system checked by a chiropractor! Chiropractors are more than spine doctors that treat back and neck pain. Chiropractic can also help with headaches, neurologic issues, sleep problems, allergies, skin conditions, and even boost your immune system. The reason that Chiropractic has such widespread impact is because by maintaining proper spinal alignment, this ensures the nervous system can function at its optimum. The job of the nervous system is to control every function in the body, down, to the smallest cell through, nerves that carry signals from the brain to the target tissues. When the spine is misaligned, we have interference in those signals and this can cause dysfunction. While subtle at first, one can grow into major problems if their nervous system is not functioning properly. This is why we always are sure to be checked and adjusted if necessary and urge all of our loved ones to do the same!


With changing these three simple, yet important, aspects of your life today, you can have a great year and years ahead of yourself. Here’s to a better you in 2019!
